Belt- or gear-driven off the engine. Pumps atmospheric air into the reservoirs until the governor cuts it out (usually 120–140 psi).
Governor
Controls when the compressor loads and unloads. Cut-in is around 100 psi, cut-out around 125 psi.
Reservoirs (air tanks)
Store compressed air. Modern trucks have separate primary and secondary reservoirs (dual system). Tanks must be drained to remove water and oil that collect at the bottom.
Foot valve (treadle)
The brake pedal. It meters air pressure to the brake chambers proportional to how hard you press.

Convert air pressure into mechanical force. Air pushes a diaphragm and pushrod, which turns the slack adjuster.
