The Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement — the H on your CDL — lets you legally transport materials that require placarding under 49 CFR. It's one of the highest-paying endorsements in trucking, and it's also one of the toughest written tests: you need to know placarding, shipping papers, loading and unloading rules, driving and parking rules, and emergency response procedures.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a TSA background check for the HazMat endorsement?
- Yes. On top of passing the written HazMat knowledge test, federal law (49 CFR 1572) requires a TSA background check with fingerprints before your state DMV will add the H endorsement.
- Is HazMat harder than General Knowledge?
- It's more detail-heavy. The regulations, placards, and shipping paper rules require memorization. Most drivers pass on the second or third practice pass through a full question bank.
