CDL School Bus Endorsement Practice Test

The School Bus endorsement (S) is required to drive any school bus carrying students to or from school and school-related activities. It's added on top of the Passenger (P) endorsement, and it's the most detailed passenger credential the CDL system offers because of how much extra safety training students require.

Our free CDL School Bus practice test walks you through everything the written knowledge test covers: the danger zone around the bus, mirror adjustment for a school bus, student loading and unloading procedures, railroad crossings, and emergency evacuation.

What this test covers

  • The danger zone and 10-foot rule around the bus
  • Mirror adjustment: cross-view, convex, and flat mirrors
  • Student loading and unloading procedures
  • Railroad crossing rules for school buses
  • Emergency exits and student evacuation
  • Antilock braking, backing, and post-trip child checks
  • Special safety concerns: bullying, security threats, and severe weather

How to study

  • Learn the danger zone (10 feet in every direction, longer in front) — it's tested with situational multiple-choice questions.
  • Master the mirror sequence — the DMV asks you which mirror shows what and when to check each.
  • The end-of-route child check is federally required in most states and shows up on the test.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Passenger endorsement before the School Bus endorsement?
Yes. Federal rules require the P endorsement as a prerequisite to the S endorsement, and both must be added to a Class B (or higher) CDL.
How many questions are on the School Bus endorsement test?
Most states give a 20-question School Bus knowledge test and require 80% (16 out of 20) to pass, plus a skills test in a representative school bus.
Is ELDT required for the School Bus endorsement?
Yes. First-time School Bus endorsement applicants on or after February 7, 2022 must complete Entry-Level Driver Training with an FMCSA-registered provider before the state knowledge test.
