CDL Passenger Endorsement Practice Test

The Passenger endorsement (P) is required to drive any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver — city buses, tour buses, shuttle vans over the limit, and charter coaches. It's the base credential for every commercial passenger job, and it's a prerequisite for the School Bus (S) endorsement.

This free CDL Passenger practice test covers vehicle inspection specific to buses, safe loading and unloading, prohibited practices, emergency exits, and the situational awareness a passenger driver needs at bus stops, railroad crossings, and drawbridges.

What this test covers

  • Pre-trip and post-trip inspection for buses
  • Loading and unloading passengers safely
  • Standee lines and baggage
  • Emergency exits and evacuations
  • Railroad crossings, drawbridges, and stop lines
  • Prohibited practices (refueling with passengers on board, hazardous materials on buses)

How to study

  • Memorize the required stops: railroad crossings, drawbridges, and (in some states) at all school-bus stops.
  • Learn the difference between forbidden and restricted HazMat items on buses — the manual lists them explicitly.
  • If you're also going for the School Bus endorsement, study Passenger first — it's the foundation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Passenger endorsement to drive a 15-passenger van?
No. A 15-passenger van does not require a CDL under federal rules. The Passenger endorsement kicks in at 16 or more passengers including the driver.
How many questions are on the Passenger endorsement test?
Most states give a 20-question Passenger knowledge test and require 80% (16 out of 20) to pass. You also complete a skills test in a representative passenger vehicle.
Is ELDT required for the Passenger endorsement?
Yes. First-time Passenger endorsement applicants on or after February 7, 2022 must complete Entry-Level Driver Training with an FMCSA-registered provider before taking the state knowledge test.
