Spring brakes are held OFF by air pressure. When system pressure drops below 20–45 psi, powerful coil springs extend and apply the brakes mechanically. They also serve as the vehicle's parking brake.
How spring brakes protect you
Because spring brakes are held off by air pressure and applied by springs, any total loss of air pressure automatically applies the brakes and stops the vehicle. This is the reason air brakes are considered fail-safe. On a modern CMV the spring-brake chambers sit piggy-backed on the service-brake chambers on the drive axles and the trailer axles, and they double as the parking brake — pulling the yellow diamond-shaped valve on the dash exhausts air and lets the springs apply.
Spring-brake test on the CDL road test
Part of the pre-trip air-brake check requires you to run system pressure down with the engine off and confirm that the spring-brake valves pop out (applying the parking brakes) somewhere between 20 and 45 psi. Failure to demonstrate this check on the CDL skills test is an automatic disqualifier. Expect written-test questions on the pressure range, the fail-safe concept, and the fact that you must never manually cage a spring brake on the road except in a documented emergency.
