Air brake lag is the ~0.4–0.5 second delay caused by air having to travel through the lines and fill the brake chambers before the shoes contact the drum. Add it to reaction distance when calculating total stopping distance.
How air brake lag affects total stopping distance
Every truck's total stopping distance is the sum of four components: perception distance, reaction distance, brake lag distance, and effective braking distance. Because a loaded commercial vehicle at 55 mph covers about 40 feet during that half-second of brake lag alone, professional drivers must consciously add roughly a full truck length to their following distance whenever they operate an air-brake-equipped vehicle. This is why the FMCSA CDL Manual recommends one second of following distance for every 10 feet of vehicle length, plus an extra second at highway speed.

The Air Brakes endorsement written test almost always contains one or two questions about brake lag: how long it lasts, why it happens, and how it changes your stopping distance calculation. Learning the roughly 0.4–0.5 second figure and the concept that stopping distance is longer than in a hydraulic-brake car is enough to answer nearly every version of this question correctly. On the road test, examiners also watch to see that you begin braking earlier for stops and grade descents, which is a real-world demonstration that you understand lag.
