The Federal Bridge Formula (23 CFR §658.17) restricts the weight carried by any group of axles based on the distance between them. It prevents concentrated loads from damaging bridges even when total gross weight is within the 80,000-lb interstate limit.
How the Bridge Formula affects load planning
Drivers do not usually calculate the Bridge Formula by hand at the scale house — the shipper or dispatcher is responsible for legal axle loading — but every CDL holder is expected to understand the principle. The formula uses two variables: the distance in feet between the outer axles of a group, and the number of axles in that group. The greater the spacing, the more weight the group may legally carry. That is why long-wheelbase tractors and spread-axle trailers exist: they let carriers legally haul more freight on the same set of tires.
Weight limits every CDL holder should memorize
Regardless of the Bridge Formula, no group of axles on the Interstate System may exceed a single-axle limit of 20,000 lb, a tandem-axle limit of 34,000 lb, or a gross vehicle limit of 80,000 lb without a special permit. Expect one or two General Knowledge questions on these numbers; the Bridge Formula itself typically appears only in longer-form study guides but understanding it explains why overloading a short-wheelbase truck is so common and so dangerous for bridge decks.
